Diploma Full-time School of Energy. The program uses the latest technologies in education to combine theory and practical lessons in a work-like environment. The strengths of the BCIT machinist programs include:. Machining might be for you if you like making things with precision with or without the aid of a computer, if you consider yourself to be a bit of a techie, or if you take pride in seeing high-quality manufactured products.

If that sounds like you, consider a career as a machinist! Graduates receive a Diploma in Trades Training. After successfully completing the CNC Machinist Technician program, graduates have the option to complete an apprenticeship in the machinist trade.

Graduates receive a credit of work-based training hours, as well as term 2 co-op work hours. After successful completion of all apprenticeship requirements, graduates will receive the BC Certificate of Apprenticeship, the BC Certificate of Qualification, and the Interprovincial Standard Endorsement, also known as the Red Seal.

CNC Machinist technicians design, manufacture and repair components, parts and tools from a variety of metals and other engineered materials using traditional and state-of-the-art machines. Many machinists of today can be found transferring complex mechanical engineering drawings from the computer screen to computerized machinery. Graduates are prepared to complete an apprenticeship as a Machinist. If the CNC Machinist program interests you, review the entrance requirements.

If you qualify, you may want to attend an information session or become a student for a day. Want to learn more about our program before you apply? Come Spend-A-Day with us. Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first qualified basis as long as space remains.

When available intakes are full, qualified applicants are wait-listed. Applicants must meet all entrance requirements prior to applying to this program.

Photo courtesy of Haas Automation Inc. The CNC machinist technician program contains a blend of classroom lectures and practical shop sessions using the latest technology. In the first term of the program, emphasis is put on learning the fundamentals of machining in topics such as engineering drawing, trade math, metallurgy, precision measuring instruments, lathe, mill, and grinder machines.

In the second Co-op Term, you will practice your knowledge in a real world manufacturer. In this course, students will become familiar with all aspects of safety that must be complied with when working in a Machine Shop environment. The course will focus on safe work practices, hazardous materials and WHMIS regulations, WorkSafeBC requirements, fire safety, as well as the proper methods of lifting and moving objects. Students must complete this course before participating in any shop floor activities.

Prerequisite s : No prerequisites are required for this course. In this course students will learn the necessary mathematic skills they need to support machining operations.

The mathematical knowledge students will acquire during this course will support all subjects covered in the machinist trades training programs. This course guides students through the process of reading and interpreting basic engineering drawings.

Students will learn to effectively communicate by reading and creating sketches of an object in several views. Also the students will be able to describe fits and tolerances. In this course students will learn to use and maintain basic hand tools according to safety requirements.

Students will select, use and properly maintain layout and measuring tools and gauges. Students will learn to identify fasteners and their application. Both metric and imperial measurement systems will be used. In this course, students will learn how to safely use a drill press, power saw, grinding machine and hydraulic press to perform machining operations to drawing specifications. In this course, students will learn engine lathes and basic lathe operations.

The focus of the course will be on providing students with hands on experience and basic expertise in various lathe operations. In this course, students learn the basic skills needed to operate vertical and horizontal milling machines including tooling, appropriate cutting speeds, feed, depth of cut, accessories and holding devices.

The course also will cover the set-up procedure for general machine operation, and explore the causes of cutter failure. In this course, students learn how to cut internal and external threads using an engine lathe. They will work with multiple types of thread forms to achieve different thread designations. In this course, students will learn to use rotary tables and indexing devices to perform milling machine operations.

They will learn to set up accessories for the milling machine to cut radii, hexagonal and pentagonal shapes according to specifications. In this course, students will learn about different types of metals and their chemical, mechanical and physical properties. Students will learn to identify steel and common metals, and modify steel properties through various heat treating processes. In this course, students will learn how to select the correct lubricants and hydraulic fluids for various types of equipment.

Students will be introduced to the different types of bearings, seals and gaskets found in machines. The course covers lubrication requirements of varying types of bearings. Students will also select cutting fluids for specific machining applications.

In this course, students learn the basics about precision surface grinding. Students will select the correct grinding wheels for specific applications, identify methods of surface grinding and articulate the advantages of each method.

Students will also learn to safely operate and maintain surface grinders. This course prepares students to find employment in the machinist trade. Students will learn how to write a cover letter and resume to detail their experience and learning accomplishments.

In this course, students will learn basic skills in oxyacetylene cutting and welding. Students will work in a welding shop environment to learn the basics about equipment components and their safe handling.

In this course students are introduced to computer numerical control CNC machines and the theory behind their operation. Topics covered include: types of machines, their operation, as well as machine components and tooling. In this course, students will plan machining procedures to complete an assembly project. Students will comply with safety practices on all machinery in the machine shop and build project components using the skills they have learned in previous courses.

The assembly project will include threaded components and surface finish requirements. Deals with key concepts such as machine construction, NC v. CNC, coordinate systems and reference points. A general overview of manual part programming is covered including functions such as data input, coordinate system presets and tool offsets.
